Bhubaneshwar is the capital of state of Odisha in eastern India and is renowned for its heritage sites, craft villages, temples and more.

Bhubaneshwar is a major railhead, airport and just 60 kms from Puri, a prime pilgrimage on the edge of Bay of Bengal.

Temple Heritage Site

Bhubaneshwar has a set of 50+ ancient temples (dated 6th Century AD onwards) within 2 kms radius, most of them in a well maintained condition. Some temples such as Mukteshwar temple have a presiding deity even today, whereas most others are heritage sites.

We recommend you spend an entire evening till Sunset exploring these and taking pictures.

Tantric Temple

Chausath Yogini Temple
Bhubaneshwar outskirts is home to a 9th century tantric temple known as Chausath Yogini Temple. The temple is circular in shape and overlooks pristine countryside.

Biggest Temple of Bhubaneshwar

Lingaraj temple Bhubaneswar
Linga Raja temple, a Lord Shiva Temple is the biggest and most impressive temple in Bhubaneshwar. It was built in the 11th Century having the Odisha style temple architecture having a massive 180 ft Gopuram. Sadly, photography is not permitted inside.

Ekambra Haat – The Craft Village

Dhokra, the famous art form of tribal region of Odisha and Chhattisgarh alongwith wide ranging other crafts are on display at Ekambra Haat, a craft village in heart of Bhubaneshwar. Spend the evenings at Ekambra for some bargain shopping and ethnic cuisine.

The Tribal Museum

Tribal Museum
India’s most impressive tribal museum is on Bhubaneshwar outskirts. There are 5 halls, a most impressive collection and life size displays of tribal ornaments, instruments, weapons, paintings, adornments, household objects and agricultural tools. There is also a display of Tribal homes of different regions of Odisha.

Dhauli and Ashoka Rock Edict

Visit Dhauli in outskirts of Bhubaneshwar for the Shanti Stupa. During day time it offers superb views and in the evenings enjoy the night and sound show.

Enroute you also visit Ashoka’s Rock Edicts, part of the collection of inscriptions made by Emperor Ashoka ( dated 268 BCE to 232 BCE).

Udayagiri Khandgiri Caves

Udayagiri and Khandgiri Caves in outskirts of Bhubaneshwar are a number of caves built for Jain monks during 2nd century BCE.
