You arrive in Zurich, and you embark on your scenic train journey to Interlaken vs Lucerne, and the train rides take you to places like Montreux, St. Moritz, Lugano and, Lucerne. The scenic background truly adds to the beauty of your couple vacation - whether on a Switzerland Honeymoon or celebrating a momentous anniversary.

  • On Day 1 of your Grand Tour of Swiss Holidays on a beautiful train journey, you arrive in Zurich.
  • On Day 2, you start your first leg of your memorable train journey and you go on The Luzern-Interlaken Express from Lucerne to the resort town of Interlaken.
  • On Day 3, you now go on a trip to the Jungfraujoch, the highest train station in Europe. And later, you are taken on the Golden Pass Line from Interlaken to the resort town of Montreux.
  • On Day 4, you go on your next beautiful train journey from Montreux to Zermatt. Check out the famed Matterhorn Mountain or go on an excursion on your own to Gornergrat.
  • On Day 5, you depart from Zermatt to St. Moritz on the Glacier Express, traveling through the Oberalp Pass and the Rhine Gorge.
  • On Day 6, you now take the Bernina Express from St. Moritz to Lugano, passing through interesting, scenic locales, the Bernina Pass and long tunnels.
  • On Day 7, you move to your last destination on this interesting circuit, Lucerne. You take the Gotthard Panorama Express from Lugano to Lucerne.
  • On Day 8, you leave Lucerne and you head back to Zurich as your Swiss Rail Holidays comes to a close.

ITINERARY

DAY 1

Arrive in Switzerland

You arrive in Zurich. Situated by the lakeside, this “metropolis of experiences”, offers a magnificent view of the snow-capped Alps in the horizon, Zurich offers a neat mix of attractions.

DAY 2

Zurich - Interlaken (Golden Pass Line Lucerne - Interlaken)

Today, you start out on the first day of your beautiful train journey experience. The train ride to Lucerne. The Luzern-Interlaken Express takes you along the shores of crystal-clear lakes, romantic waterfalls and over the magnificent Brünig Mountain Pass.

After a short journey, you arrive in Interlaken. The resort town of Interlaken lies in the Bernese Oberland. The place neatly sits between two lakes, Lake Thun and Lake Brienz. It is also in the heart of the famous Mount Jungfrau and offers great views of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau summits.

You stay overnight in Interlaken.

DAY 3

Interlaken - Montreux (Jungfraujoch and Golden Pass Line Interlaken - Montreux)

You embark on an excursion to Jungfraujoch, the highest train station in Europe at 3454 m. The place feels every bit like a winter wonderland. As you arrive here, the cold, icy air streams blow across your face and you are captivated by the beautiful environs. On one side, it is the eye-catching views of the Mittelland all the way up to the Vosges. On the other side you have Europe’s largest glacier, the Aletsch glacier which is encased by tall peaks.

In the evening, you board the famous Golden Pass line from Interlaken and travel all the way to Montreux. The beautiful town of Montreux lies besides Lake Geneva. Interestingly, on the one side it is surrounded by vineyards and on the other you have the beautiful snow-covered Alps.

DAY 4

Montreux - Zermatt

You now embark on the next leg of your beautiful train journey across Switzerland to Zermatt. Zermatt rests at the foothills of the Matterhorn Mountain. Tourists throng this place owing to its proximity to the Matterhorn Mountain. The place retains its old-world character and it is still a car-free spot. With respect to sightseeing and trips, there are many different options you can explore.

The latter half of the day, you can spend by either visiting the most captured mountain in the world – Matterhorn (on your own) from Zermatt village or you can go on a non-guided excursion to the Gornergrat.

You stay overnight in Zermatt.

DAY 5

Zermatt - St. Moritz

In the morning, you board the world-famous Glacier Express for a ride to St. Moritz. The train takes you through the Oberalp Pass (2033 m) and through the impressive Rhine Gorge. And you can enjoy and capture some spectacular scenery that Switzerland has to offer.

After an exciting trip, you arrive in St. Moritz for an overnight stay here.

DAY 6

St. Moritz - Lugano (Bernina Express)

Board the famed Bernina Express from the St. Moritz station. It is indeed one of the best train journeys in Switzerland. You climb the stunning Bernina Pass that stands at 2253m, and you go past, the beautiful, imposing glaciers and mountains, and you start moving down to Brusio and Poschiavo. Traversing through winding long tunnels, and spiralling viaducts, you finally reach the end of the Bernina line, and you disembark at the Tirano station in Italy. From here, you are taken on an express bus to your next destination Lugano.

DAY 7

Lugano - Lucerne (Gotthard Panorama Express)

From Lugano, you move to your next destination, Lucerne. And now you take your next train ride on the Gotthard Panorama Express, this takes you from Mediterranean locales to the traditional heartland of Switzerland. The rustic locales and the landscapes feel straight out of a picture postcard. On this train, from Lugano to Flüelen, you travel first class, in the panorama carriage. And in the panorama car, you are accompanied by a travel guide, and you learn a lot about the sheer aura of the places, and the legends and myths. Once you reach Flüelen, you are taken by boat to Lake Lucerne.

You stay overnight in Lucerne.

DAY 8

Departure

On Day 8, your beautiful train journey in Switzerland culminates and you depart from Lucerne to Zurich and from there you take your onward flight.

WHEN TO GO

April to September is generally the most recommended period to visit Switzerland. Winter has its own allure because of winter sports like skiing, snow-boarding, ice skating. The universal festivities such as Christmas and New Year are very grandly celebrated here and is a spectacle to see the Swiss streets lit up. However, the best time to plan a Switzerland trip is during summers from April end to September end to enjoy the marvellously scenic mountains that you will be vacationing amidst.
